Tucked away in the dense forests of pine, deodar, and gorgeous rhododendrons, Chopta is a stunning meadows region in Uttarakhand. Serving as the direct base camp for the famous Tungnath Trek, it attracts avid trekkers, campers, and nature observers. The lush green bugyals in the summer turn into a snowy wonderland in the winter, making it a perfect year-round destination.

Tungnath & Chandrashila Summit

The trek begins from Chopta, leading you up a steep but well-paved 3.5 km trail to Tungnath, the highest Shiva Temple in the world and one of the sacred Panch Kedars. A further 1.5 km steep ascent takes you to the summit of Chandrashila Peak (approx. 4,000 meters). Reaching the top rewards you with an unmatched 360-degree panoramic view of snow-blanketed giants like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Peak, and Chaukhamba.

Morning pickup from Dehradun Railway Station or Airport. Begin your scenic journey towards the magnificent meadows of Chopta. The drive takes you along the winding mountain roads following the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. Upon reaching Chopta by late afternoon, check in to your pre-booked camps or homestay. Enjoy the crisp mountain air and a beautiful sunset. Dinner and overnight stay in Chopta.

Start early after breakfast. The trek from Chopta to Tungnath is 3.5 km and offers beautiful views of the alpine meadows. Visit the ancient Tungnath Temple (highest Shiva shrine). From Tungnath, a steeper 1.5 km climb takes you to the summit of Chandrashila (approx. 4,000m). Witness glorious 360-degree views of the Garhwal Himalayas. Trek back down to Chopta by late afternoon. Enjoy a relaxing evening by the campfire. Dinner and overnight stay in Chopta.

After breakfast, pack your bags and check out from your accommodation. Board your vehicle and commence the return journey to Dehradun. The driver will drop you at Dehradun Railway Station or Airport for your onward journey, bringing your unforgettable trekking adventure to a close.

The trek to Chandrashila from Chopta is approximately 5 kilometers one way. The path up to Tungnath is well-paved but steep, while the final 1.5 km to Chandrashila is a rocky and steeper climb. It is considered moderately difficult but entirely achievable for beginners with good basic fitness.

The trek can be done almost year-round. April to November offers beautiful clear views and lush green bugyals. December to March is ideal for snow trekking enthusiasts, though the trail becomes significantly harder. We advise avoiding the peak monsoon months (July-August) due to heavy rains and slippery trails.

No, the main shrine of Tungnath Temple usually closes around November following Diwali and reopens in late April or early May, as the region receives heavy snowfall. However, the trek to the Chandrashila peak often remains accessible with the help of local guides.

During the summer and autumn months, the trail is very clear and easy to follow, so a guide is not strictly necessary. However, if you are traveling in the winter and expect snow, hiring a local guide is highly recommended for safety.
