One of the most famous pilgrimages taken by Hindus is the Char Dham Yatra which are snuggled in the lap of the Himalayas. The Char Dham comprises of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath; while the former two are dedicated to the holy river Yamuna and Ganga respectively; the latter are shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu respectively. Char Dham is therefore considered the abode of deities and pilgrims are expected to make a trip once in their lifetime for attaining spiritual bliss.
Significance of Char Dham Yatra
Char Dham is a spiritual journey undertaken by Hindus for rejuvenation and peace of mind. According to mythology, it is said that to attain salvation and peace of mind the Pandavas undertook the Char Dham Yatra after the Kurukshetra war. Fighting their kith and kin during the war, took a toll on the Pandavas. To ask forgiveness for their souls, they undertook this arduous journey through the mystic and majestic Himalayas. As a result of their belief in Karma, Hindus undertake this journey, considered one of the most pious in their religion. Thanks to the religious significance and important of the Char Dham yatra, several people take a trip to the state of Uttarakhand, not just from India, but also abroad (UK, USA, South Africa etc.)
- Yamunotri
According to religious Hindu texts, Veda and Purana, Yamunotri is the site of origin of Yamuna, considered the “sister of Yama.” Since Yama is the God of Death, a dip in this holy river is said to save you from untimely death. Near the temple is a hot water spring which gushes out of a mountain cave. One of the most important kund is Surya Kund which is adjacent to Divya Shila. This Divya Shila is worshipped before offering prayers to the deity. Yamunotri is the first stop in the Char Dham yatra where prasad is offered in the form of rice which is cooked in the hot water springs.
- Gangotri
The origin of the holy Ganga river is this point. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga descended on earth to absolve the sins of King Bhagirath’s predecessors. The river is considered Moksha Dayani, or absolver of all sins. It is said that taking a dip in river Ganga can take away all your sins. The origin is situated at Gaumukh in the Gangotri glacier which is an 18 km trek from the glacier.
- Kedarnath
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath is the 11th out of 12 Jyotirlingas. It is said that Lord Shiva appeared before the Pandavas on their penance yatra towards heaven after the Mahabharat war. Shiv Linga here is in the form of a bull’s hump and was constructed more than a thousand years earlier by Jagad Guru Adi Shankracharya. Located in the Rudra Himalayan range in Uttarakhand state, Kedarnath is the northernmost of the jyotirlingas. Located at a height of 3,581 m. you need to trek 16 km from Gaurikund to reach this holy place.
- Badrinath
Among the other Char Dhams dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Rameshwaram in south, Jagannath Puri in east, Dwarka in west), Badrinath is the northernmost. The Sarasvati river, considered the holiest, originates from here. It is said that at this place, Lord Vishnu did tapasya as a result of which anyone who visits here gets instantly blessed. A natural hot water spring, Taptakund (regarded as the residing place of Agni Deva) is situated close to the temple’s entrance so that devotees can take a dip in it prior to entering the shrine.
