Sri Hemkund Sahib - The Highest Gurudwara

Situated at a staggering altitude of 15,225 ft, Shri Hemkund Sahib is a highly revered Sikh pilgrimage site dedicated to the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The Gurudwara is beautifully nestled beside a crystal-clear, star-shaped alpine lake, which is completely surrounded by seven majestic, snow-capped mountain peaks. The spiritual aura here is incredibly powerful.

The Sacred Trek & Natural Beauty

The pilgrimage is not just a journey of faith, but also a test of physical endurance. It involves a 10 km trek from Govindghat to the base camp at Ghangaria, followed by a very steep 6 km ascent to the Gurudwara. The pathway is lined with dense forests, waterfalls, and blooming alpine flowers. For those unable to trek the entire distance, pony rides and helicopter services (up to Ghangaria) are available.

Base Camp Ghangaria

Ghangaria serves as the crucial base camp for both the Hemkund Sahib Yatra and the famous Valley of Flowers trek. Located at the confluence of the river Bhyundar Ganga and Pushpawati, it is a bustling little settlement available only from May to October. All pilgrims rest here before making the final push towards the high-altitude shrine early the next morning.

We manage your entire pilgrimage tour with premium private transport from Dehradun, well-located cozy hotel accommodations in Govindghat and Ghangaria, and daily hot breakfast and dinner spreads. Itinerary (Day wise)

View All Days

Morning pick-up from Dehradun Railway Station/Airport and drive towards Govindghat via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Joshimath. It is a long but scenic drive through the mountains. Upon reaching Govindghat in the evening, check-in to your hotel. Rest, have dinner, and prepare for the trek starting the next day. Overnight stay in Govindghat.

After breakfast, a short drive of 4 km takes you to Pulna village (the new starting point of the trek). From here, start your 10 km trek towards Ghangaria. The path runs along the beautiful Pushpawati river. Alternatively, you can hire a pony or take a helicopter ride (at your own cost) from Govindghat directly to Ghangaria. Upon reaching, check in to your hotel/camp. Evening at leisure. Overnight stay in Ghangaria.

Start very early in the morning. The 6 km trek to Hemkund Sahib is quite steep and challenging. Upon reaching the holy shrine (15,225 ft), take a sacred dip in the icy-cold Hemkund Lake, attend the Ardas (prayers) in the Gurudwara, and visit the nearby Lakshman Temple. After receiving the divine blessings, trek back down to Ghangaria before evening. Dinner and overnight stay in Ghangaria.

After breakfast, trek 10 km back down to Pulna/Govindghat. Once you reach the road head, board your vehicle. Commence the long return drive back to Dehradun. Our driver will drop you at the Dehradun Railway Station or Airport in the late evening, concluding your holy yatra with peaceful memories.

Frequently asked questions

The Yatra typically opens in late May and closes in October, depending on weather and snow conditions. July and August are beautiful but see heavy monsoon rains. September offers the clearest weather and great trekking conditions.

The trek from Govindghat to Ghangaria (10 km) is mostly a gradual ascent and relatively moderate. However, the final 6 km trek from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib is extremely steep and challenging due to the high altitude (15,225 ft). Proper physical fitness is required.

Helicopter services operate between Govindghat and Ghangaria, turning a 10 km trek into a 5-minute scenic flight. However, from Ghangaria, there is no helicopter service to Hemkund Sahib; pilgrims must either trek the remaining 6 km or hire a pony/palki.

The Valley of Flowers trek also starts from the Ghangaria base camp. By adding 1 extra day to this 4-day itinerary, we can easily customize your package to include a guided trek to the Valley of Flowers. Just mention it in the customization form!
