The trek to Kedarnath from Gaurikund is approximately 16 to 18 kilometers one way and involves a continuous, often steep ascent. It is considered moderate to difficult. For those unable to walk, ponies, palanquins (dolis), and helicopter services are available for hire.

The best time to visit Kedarnath is during the pre-monsoon months of May and June, and the post-monsoon months of September and October. July and August experience heavy rainfall which can cause landslides and disrupt travel.

The Kedarnath Temple typically opens on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya (usually in late April or early May) and closes on the day of Bhai Dooj (shortly after Diwali) for the winter season. During winter, the idol is shifted to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath.
