All Five Kedar Temples & Himalayan Treks
According to Hindu mythology, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to atone for their sins. Shiva eluded them and took the form of a bull. When Bhima tried to catch the bull, it sank into the ground, and its body parts later manifested at five different locations in the Garhwal Himalayas. These five sacred sites are collectively known as the Panch Kedar.
The hump of the bull appeared at Kedarnath, the navel and belly at Madhyamaheshwar, the arms at Tungnath (the highest Shiva temple in the world), the face at Rudranath, and the matted hair (jatas) at Kalpeshwar. Completing the darshan of all five temples is considered one of the ultimate spiritual achievements.
This 12-day journey is a true test of physical and mental endurance, encompassing over 80 kilometers of trekking through some of the most breathtaking alpine meadows (bugyals), dense forests, and high-altitude rocky terrains in Uttarakhand. The trek to Rudranath is specifically known to be the toughest, offering unmatched views of the Nanda Devi and Trishul peaks.
While Diamond Hospitalities provides a comfortable private vehicle (Innova/Ertiga/Tempo Traveler) for road transfers and comfortable hotels at base camps, please note that accommodation in high-altitude zones like Madhyamaheshwar, Panar, and Rudranath will be very basic (Guesthouses, Camps, or Homestays) emphasizing spiritual survival over luxury.
Morning pick-up from Dehradun Railway Station/Airport. Start your grand journey by driving towards Guptkashi via Rishikesh, Devprayag, and Rudraprayag. Enjoy the beautiful mountain vistas and the confluences of the Alaknanda river. Upon reaching Guptkashi or Phata by evening, check into your hotel. Rest and prepare for your first major trek tomorrow. Overnight stay.
Early morning drive to Sonprayag, followed by a local jeep ride to Gaurikund. From Gaurikund, start your 16 km steep trek to the holy shrine of Kedarnath (First Kedar). You may hire a pony or palanquin at your own cost. Upon reaching, check into your basic accommodation. In the evening, visit the magnificent Kedarnath Temple for Darshan and Aarti. Overnight stay in Kedarnath.
Wake up early for the morning pooja at Kedarnath. After breakfast, commence your 16 km return trek down to Gaurikund. Take a local jeep to Sonprayag where our driver will be waiting. Drive back to Guptkashi or proceed to Ukhimath. Check-in to your hotel, have a hot dinner, and rest your tired muscles. Overnight stay.
After breakfast, drive to Ransi village, the starting point for the Madhyamaheshwar trek. From Ransi, begin your 12 km trek passing through dense forests, waterfalls, and the village of Gaundar to reach Bantoli, which is situated at the confluence of the Madhyamaheshwar Ganga and Martyenda Ganga rivers. Stay overnight in basic lodge/camps at Bantoli.
Start your day early as today's 10 km trek from Bantoli to Madhyamaheshwar (Second Kedar) involves a continuous and steep ascent. Upon reaching the beautiful meadow where the temple is located, complete your Darshan of the belly of Lord Shiva. The views of the Chaukhamba peaks from here are mesmerizing. Overnight stay in a basic guesthouse/homestay near the temple.
Wake up to a glorious sunrise. After breakfast, begin the long but relatively easier descent of 22 km back to Ransi village. Once you reach Ransi, board your vehicle and drive towards the "Mini Switzerland of India" - Chopta. Check-in to your hotel/camp in Chopta, have dinner, and rest for the night.
After breakfast, start your trek to Tungnath (Third Kedar), the world's highest Shiva temple. It is a well-paved 4 km ascent. If energy permits, trek a further 1 km to the Chandrashila peak for a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Himalayas. Trek back down to Chopta, board your vehicle, and drive towards Mandal / Sagar village. Overnight stay at a hotel in Mandal/Sagar.
Today begins the toughest part of the Panch Kedar yatra. From Sagar village, start an arduous 12 km steep trek through dense alpine forests to reach the sprawling, lush green meadows of Panar Bugyal. The panoramic views from the Bugyal are incredibly rewarding. Spend the night in tents/basic huts at Panar Bugyal.
Start very early and trek 8 km along the high-altitude ridges (including Pitradhar) to reach Rudranath (Fourth Kedar). Here, the face of Lord Shiva is worshipped. Seek blessings at this highly remote and sacred temple. After Darshan and spending some time in the divine aura, trek 8 km back to Panar Bugyal for your overnight stay.
After breakfast, begin your 12 km descent back to Sagar village. The downhill trek requires caution. Upon reaching the road head at Sagar, board your vehicle and drive to Pipalkoti or Helang. Check-in to a proper hotel, enjoy a well-deserved hot bath and a comfortable bed. Overnight stay in Pipalkoti.
After breakfast, drive towards the beautiful Urgam Valley. From the road head, it is a very short and easy trek (approx 2 km) to reach Kalpeshwar (Fifth Kedar), where Lord Shiva's matted hair (jatas) are worshipped. This completes your epic Panch Kedar Darshan! Walk back to the vehicle and drive downwards towards Rudraprayag or Srinagar for your final overnight stay.
Enjoy your final morning in the Garhwal Himalayas. After breakfast, check out from the hotel and drive back down to Dehradun via Devprayag and Rishikesh. Our driver will drop you at the Dehradun Railway Station or Airport in the afternoon, concluding a truly unforgettable and triumphant spiritual adventure.
