Barkot - The Peaceful Base Camp

Situated at an elevation of 1,220 meters on the banks of the Yamuna River, Barkot is a picturesque town that serves as the perfect base camp for the Yamunotri pilgrimage. It offers breathtaking views of the Bandarpunch peaks and provides a serene environment for pilgrims to rest before and after their holy trek.

Yamunotri Temple - Source of Goddess Yamuna

The trek begins from Janki Chatti, leading you up a 6 km trail to Yamunotri, the westernmost shrine of the Char Dham Yatra. Here, pilgrims seek blessings at the temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. A vital part of the ritual includes taking a holy dip in the hot waters of Surya Kund and paying reverence to the Divya Shila.

Frequently asked questions

The trek to Yamunotri from Janki Chatti is approximately 6 kilometers one way. The path is well-paved but involves a moderate ascent. For those unable to walk, ponies and palanquins (dolis) are easily available for hire at the base.

The best time to visit Yamunotri is during the summer months from May to June, and the post-monsoon months of September and October. July and August should generally be avoided due to heavy rainfall and the risk of landslides.

The Yamunotri Temple typically opens on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya (usually in late April or early May) and closes on Yama Dwitiya (Bhai Dooj) shortly after Diwali. During winters, the idol is shifted to Kharsali village.
